Tinnitus is a frustrating affliction that involves incessant ear ringing sounds, otherwise known as tinnitus sounds for long-term sufferers. Tinnitus impacts a sufferer’s life, the severity of which ranges from mild to severe.

As head of the ENT department at the largest hospital in South Australia, and an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Hodge has made it his life ambition to champion the cause of tinnitus sufferers. In today’s video, Dr Hodge answers the question about whether alcohol negatively impacts your tinnitus.

“The short answer is yes,” says Dr Hodge, “Alcohol does not have a good effect on the inner ear as we all know that if you have a few beers or glasses of wine, you don’t walk in a straight line.”

He goes on to explain that some people, however, have found that when having minimal quantities of alcohol, there can be a positive effect because it relaxes you. There is a fine line between being relaxed and starting to become inebriated and, thus, beginning the negative impact on the inner ear. We are referring to very small quantities of alcohol.

“If you are relaxed then the chances of your mood lifting are greater and thus creating a positive outlook at the time,” clarifies Dr Hodge. With a positive outlook comes more significant chances of being open to social interaction, being interested in different activities, hobbies or topics and generally having your attention diverted, i.e. being distracted.

“This distraction also means an opportunity for being distracted from your tinnitus as you will not notice it as much when happy and busy with lots of activities,” explains Dr Hodge.
